“Silent Exodus”
by Helen Lee, Christianity Today, August 12, 1996.
This is considered by many to be one of the most influential ever articles written on the topic of 2nd gen Asians leaving the church. In fact, she coined the now well-known term "Silent Exodus" to describe the phenomenon of second-gen East Asians leaving the church. What's amazing about this article is that even though it was written almost 20 years ago, it's 100% relevant for the Hmong right now. This is a must read. (Article)

Growing Healthy Asian American Churches
edited by Peter Cha, S. Steve Kang, Helen Lee
In my opinion, it's one of the best out there because it covers all the important issues and does so in a clear and easy-to-understand way. If you only read one book on AA ministry, this should be it. (Amazon)

Invitation to Lead: Guidance for Emerging Asian American Leaders
by Paul Tokunaga
I really like this one because it's written by a guy with extensive experience in InterVarsity Christian Fellowship, one of the largest college ministries out there. Pang Foua and I are InterVarsity alum and we love their approach to ministry. This one is great because it written for young adults and those who work with them. (Amazon)

Honoring the Generations: Learning with Asian North American Congregations
edited by M. Sydney Park, Soong-Chan Rah, Al Tizon
This is the newest book that I have. It just came out last year. I've only read about half the chapters, but really liked them. Definitely excited to read more. It's written by three giants in the field, so it's high caliber stuff. (Amazon)

Pursuing the Pearl: A Comprehensive Resource for Multi-Asian Ministry
by Ken Fong
I haven't read this one, but it's largely considered the "grandfather" of Asian ministry books. It was the very first one ever written to tackle the issue. This (in 1999) and Helen Lee's article (in 1996) really gave birth to the next decade of authors. I'm gonna have to read it one of these days, because I feel like my knowledge just isn't complete without reading it. (Amazon)

Asian American Youth Ministry
by DJ Chuang
Admittedly, this book was a mixed bag. Some chapters were insightful, others weren't very helpful. It was a collection of presentations from a conference on Asian American Youth Ministry. I put it on the list just because it's the only book EVER written specifically on youth ministry for Asian Americans. Although it's certainly not top-shelf material, it's still worth the read. (Amazon)

The Monkey and the Fish: Liquid Leadership for a Third-Culture Church
by Dave Gibbons
One more... This is by the author of a great second-gen Asian American church in California (Newsong Church - http://www.newsong.net). This book covers a lot of the core principles on which he founded his church. (Amazon)

Losing Face & Finding Grace: 12 Bible Studies for Asian Americans
by Tim Lin
One more... This one isn't a book as much as a Bible study. This is another excellent resource from InterVarsity. It's the only Bible study specifically written for Asian American college students. I did this with by Bible study guys last year and it was really good. (Amazon)
